Iron deficiency is a problem that can be tied in with anemia: a condition in which the blood in a human does not have the necessary amount of red blood cells. Because of this, the transport of nutrients as well as oxygen to cells and the transport of waste and carbon dioxide to the lungs is compromised and cannot be done as effectively. Therefore, the body begins to suffer.

As the name suggests, iron deficiency means that there is not enough iron in the body. Iron plays a direct role in the creation of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that is very oxygen. Without this abundance of hemoglobin, the body has an inability of transporting oxygen which is necessary for processes such as the electron transport. That process is required for creating ATP for the body.

The good news is that, unless the iron deficiency is caused by something such as internal bleeding, treatment is very straight forward. By taking a simple iron supplement, the body can get all the iron is needs. However, having a strong diet in foods that are heavy in iron is always necessary. Red meat, for example, has a lot of iron.

Iron Deficiency Symptoms

The unfortunate thing about iron deficiency and anemia is that, at first, the symptoms are ridiculously mild. This means that they can go entirely unnoticed. However, as more blood cells are not able to be created and the body begins to suffer, the patient tends to notice and that is when they go to the doctor.

One of the most well known symptoms of anemia is fatigue. Since the blood is unable to get the necessary ingredients for lie around the body, the person begins to suffer severe fatigue. This is also the most noticeable because a person who is usually outgoing and active might suddenly make a big change and be very tired all the time. However, here are a few other symptoms to look out when considering iron deficiency as the cause:

Headache

Shortness of breath

Irritability: as the body begins to weaken, people get more frustrated and harsh.

Inflammation of the tongue

Increased susceptibility to different bacterial and fungal infections

Restless leg syndrome. This is described as an uncomfortable feeling in the leg even when resting.

Dizziness

Brittle Nails

There are plenty more symptoms. However, if any of these symptoms are currently going on, consider trying an iron supplement. Take one and if it starts to make changes that are positive, you’ve figured out what is causing all your problems. However, if the supplement doesn’t help, go to the doctor to get tests done. The doctor will be able to pinpoint the exact problem.
